TRUTH CHECK

The 30 second ad focuses on what Brian Fagan has done over the last four years on the city council, and includes a key campaign promise. He started with this statistic:

Crime is down 22 percent in Cedar Rapids.

In July, violent crime was in fact down 22 percent compared to the previous summer. It follows ramped up community policing efforts led by new Police Chief Greg Graham. But it's hard to tell how much impact city council action had on those numbers.

How about this:

"There will be more building in this community in the next 24 months than there has been in the last 24 years."

The city has several billions of dollars in recovery work planned over the next decade and a lot should happen soon. But time will tell how much comes in 24 months and what comes after.
"We need a mayor with the right experience, not a professional politician."

Ron Corbett, Fagans opponent does have a long record of political service. He served part-time in the Iowa legislature for 13 years while holding a job at CRST Trucking. He hasn't held elected office for a decade.Truth Check: Brian Fagan Campaign Ad
