TRUTH CHECK
In just one week Cedar Rapids will vote on a new mayor, and one of the challengers hit the airwaves with his second ad. Corbett comes out on the offensive, working to highlight differences between him and his competitor Brian Fagan.
Ron Corbetts second ad brings up what he says are three big differences.
"He took away our right to vote on bond referendums. I'll restore that right," Corbett says in the advertisement.
Actually, the state legislature gave cities the ability to pass bonds without voter approval during the 2009 legislative session. Brian Fagan and other city leaders never had the power to take the citizen vote away. However, the city's lobbyist pushed for that change with the council's approval.
"He voted for a new tax on our heating bills. I think that's wrong," Corbett said.
In the summer, the city council passed a new franchise fee. The one percent increase will generate more than $2 million a year for the city.
"Now he wants the option of a local income tax. I think the people of Cedar Rapids pay enough already," Corbett said.
The city council has pushed for more tax options; a move it says will lessen the role of property taxes in the city. One new tax option is a local payroll tax.
