TRUTH CHECK

The election for one city council seat in Cedar Rapids is heating up. A new ad is an aggressive attack against a current council member. But are the claims true?

"Since 2008 when we most needed him, pat Shey missed a whopping 44 council meetings and work sessions."

The explosion says it all; Jerry McGrane is on the attack against fellow council colleague Pat Shey.

"Shouldn't our elected officials at least show up for work?"

Here are the raw numbers: Pat Shey has missed 93 meetings over nearly four years. McGrane has missed 30. Those numbers include the major council meetings every Wednesday and all the others; from budget sessions to interviewing applicants for city commissions.

As for the Wednesday meetings, Shey has missed just 12 over four years, while McGrane has missed 5. Shey's attendance on Wednesday is about 93 percent, compared to 97 percent for McGrane.

"While Pat Shey is against passing a buy local resolution, Jerry McGrane will vote for it."

Today Pat Shey told me he supports buy local and said he sees no reason for anyone to oppose it.

Last year, however, the Gazette quoted him saying buy local may be "a solution in search of a problem, stating that no local businesses had complained.

You may have heard a familiar song in that ad. It's I Gotta Feeling from the Black Eyed Peas. We contacted an entertainment lawyer in L.A. and said the campaign would have to pay to use that song. He also said it would be a shocking sight to see the bill. The campaign has a new version of the ad without the popular hit.Truth Check: Jerry McGrane Campaign Ad
