A baby bruised and taken to the hospital.
Now the young father is accused of hurting her. Tonight the parents of 6 month of Kyla McCowen are fighting to keep her. She's now fully recovered, and living with her grandma.
In an exclusive interview, the father tells Fox News at Nine's Brittney Hibbs he's being falsely accused.
Baby Kyla’s crib lays empty tonight.
“I don't even like being in this room.”
Kyla’s father 21 year old Brandon McCowen steps away from the camera when he thinks about his daughters empty room.
“People think yeah this is our first kid and we're young and it’s like they expect us to make mistakes but nobody makes the mistake of the extent of their daughter being injured like this."
Accused of what court documents say little Kyla experienced. Internal head injuries and severe retinal hemorrhages too many to count. And doctors say it was not an accident.
"We don't believe that he would intentionally harm her, he loves her to death,” says Kyla’s grandfather.
"I wish people knew what the truth was," says McCowen.
Brandon says he was playing X-Box and reached for his controller when Kyla slipped.
“She just rolled out of my arms unto the bed it was a 11/2 feet to two foot fall.”
That's when he began to panic.
“She got real pale and she wasn't laughing that's the bottom line she wasn't being her fun self. And was just like a zombie.”
“We had to go to the police station we were there for an hour then they had to come here and take pictures of a lot of stuff and then, then we could go to Iowa City.”
Now the young couple speaks out to keep their daughter.
"What I've been telling them is the exactly what happened and they're just blowing me off. They think I'm lying. I'm miserable, I'm always thinking about her. I can’t get her off of my mind she’s my whole life she’s the reason I 'm still here.”
Brandon knows he can’t be with Kyla now but the fight is just beginning.
“I don't give up because I’m going to get her back absolutely.”
