Police are searching for a gunman who fired shots at Bever Ave. and 16th St. in Southeast Cedar Rapids. Investigators say two pairs of friends started fighting with each other down at Redmond Park and it spilled over to the intersection, where someone grabbed a shotgun and fired it off.
Police say no one was hit, but they did find a casing in the street. Investigators and their dogs searched all over the neighborhood. Police tell me everyone involved in the fight had scattered by the time they got here, except one of the guys who was shot at. He's now being interviewed by police, along with several other witnesses.
The neighborhood was very crowded when this dangerous situation went down, including a group of children playing in a nearby kiddy pool.
"Several people were fighting and then all of a sudden, you hear a pop and it was like a gunshot and you know it was rushing the kids inside, my wife and her friend were sitting out on the porch and everybody just ran inside real quick," says neighbor Matthew Brownfield.
Another neighbor BJ Johnson adds, "If you're not safe in your yard, well then where are you safe? Even if you're in the house, if they're using a high power weapon then your walls won't even stop a bullet."
A couple hours after the gunshots went off, we saw a group of people start pushing and yelling at each other again in the same area. Police showed up soon after that. We don't know yet if the two fights were connected. Police believe they know the names of the people involved but they aren't saying who they are.
